Laminate Glossary – A to Z Guide to Decorative Laminate Terms

The definitive reference guide to decorative laminate terminology used by architects, interior designers, furniture manufacturers, and contractors across India. Bookmark this page for quick reference.

A

Abrasion Resistance
The ability of a laminate surface to withstand surface wear from friction and rubbing. Measured under IS:2046 standards. High-pressure laminates (HPL) like Supalam offer superior abrasion resistance compared to low-pressure laminates.
Acrylic Laminate
A premium decorative surface material with a high-gloss finish created by bonding an acrylic layer. Known for brilliant shine, scratch resistance, and depth of colour. Supalam’s AcryGlem range is an example.
Adhesive (Contact Adhesive)
The bonding agent used to fix laminates to substrates. Neoprene-based contact adhesives are most commonly used for post-forming laminate application.

B

Backing Sheet
A kraft paper or phenolic sheet laminated to the reverse side of decorative laminates to provide balance and prevent warping of the substrate panel.
Bond Strength
The force required to separate a laminate from its substrate. A key quality parameter measured under IS:2046. Supalam laminates meet and exceed IS:2046 bond strength requirements.
Balancing Laminate
A plain or decorative laminate applied to the underside of a panel to counteract the tension of the face laminate and prevent bowing.

C

Colour Consistency
The uniformity of colour across laminate sheets within the same production batch. Important for large furniture projects requiring multiple sheets.
Contact Cement
See Adhesive. A pressure-sensitive adhesive applied to both the laminate and substrate surfaces before bonding.
Core
The internal layers of kraft paper impregnated with phenolic resin that form the structural body of a high-pressure laminate sheet.

D

Decorative Laminate
A thin, durable surfacing material made by bonding layers of kraft paper and a decorative paper under high heat and pressure. Used on furniture, cabinets, wall panels, and countertops.
Digital Print Laminate
Laminates featuring designs created using high-resolution digital printing technology. Enables photographic-quality imagery, custom patterns, and unlimited design possibilities. Supalam’s DigiPedia collection.
Durability
The ability of a laminate to retain its appearance and structural integrity over time under normal use conditions.

E

Edge Band
A thin strip of material (PVC, ABS, veneer, or laminate) applied to the exposed edges of panels and boards to cover the raw core and provide a finished appearance. Supa Edge Band by Supalam offers matching edge solutions.
Embossed Texture
A surface texture applied to laminates during manufacturing that mimics natural materials like wood grain, stone, or fabric. Adds tactile and visual depth.

F

Fire Retardant Laminate
Laminates engineered to slow the spread of flame, used in commercial spaces, hospitals, and public buildings where fire safety codes apply.
Formaldehyde Emission
A measure of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by laminates. Low-emission laminates are preferred for indoor air quality. IS:2046 specifies acceptable limits.

G

Gloss Finish
A high-shine surface finish that reflects light and creates a bright, modern appearance. Popular for kitchen cabinets and contemporary interiors. See Matte vs Gloss Laminate guide.
Grain (Wood Grain)
A decorative pattern on laminates that replicates the natural grain patterns of wood. Available in various species and tones. See Wood Grain Laminate Guide.

H

High-Pressure Laminate (HPL)
Decorative laminate manufactured by pressing multiple layers of resin-impregnated paper at pressures exceeding 70 kg/cm2 and temperatures above 120degC. Produces a dense, durable sheet. Standard thickness: 0.8mm and 1mm.
HPL vs LPL
HPL (High-Pressure Laminate) is denser and more durable than LPL (Low-Pressure Laminate or melamine). See our HPL vs LPL comparison guide.

I

IS:2046
The Indian Standard specification for decorative thermosetting synthetic resin bonded laminated sheets. The benchmark quality standard for laminates in India. All Supalam products comply with IS:2046. See IS:2046 complete guide.
Impact Resistance
A laminate’s ability to withstand sudden mechanical shocks without cracking or delaminating.

K

Kitchen Laminate
Laminates specifically engineered for kitchen environments, offering enhanced resistance to moisture, heat, steam, and common kitchen chemicals. See Kitchen Laminates by Supalam.
Kraft Paper
The brown paper layers impregnated with phenolic resin that form the core of high-pressure laminates. Provides structural strength and thickness.

L

Laminate Sheet Size
Standard decorative laminate sheets in India are available in 8ft x 4ft (2440mm x 1220mm) dimensions. See Laminate Sheet Size and Yield guide.
Low-Pressure Laminate (LPL)
Also known as melamine-faced boards. Manufactured by bonding a decorative paper to a substrate (MDF or particle board) at lower pressures. Less durable than HPL but more economical.

M

MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard)
A popular substrate for post-lam laminate application. Smooth, uniform surface ideal for laminate bonding. See MDF vs Particle Board comparison.
Matte Finish
A non-reflective surface finish that gives a sophisticated, understated look. Hides fingerprints and scratches better than gloss finishes.
Moisture Resistance
A laminate’s ability to resist moisture absorption and delamination in humid environments.

P

Particle Board
A substrate made from wood chips and resin, used as a base for laminates in furniture manufacturing. Economical but heavier than MDF.
Post-Forming Laminate
A flexible laminate grade that can be bent around curved edges and profiles when heated. Used for kitchen countertops with rounded edges.
Pre-lam Board (Pre-laminated Board)
MDF or particle board with laminate factory-applied on one or both faces. Ready-to-use for furniture manufacturing. See Supa Pre-lam Boards.
Phenolic Resin
The thermosetting resin used to impregnate kraft paper layers in HPL manufacturing. Provides hardness, chemical resistance, and dimensional stability.

S

Scratch Resistance
A laminate surface’s ability to resist surface marks from sharp objects. Measured in Newton force required to cause visible scratching.
Substrate
The base material (MDF, particle board, plywood) to which laminate is bonded. Substrate quality significantly affects the final result.
Sunmica
A popular brand name that became a generic term for decorative laminates in India, similar to how Xerox became synonymous with photocopying. See Laminate vs Sunmica.

T

Texture
The tactile and visual surface quality of a laminate. Common textures include smooth, silk, linen, wood grain, stone, and suede.
Thickness
Standard HPL laminates are available in 0.8mm (general furniture) and 1mm (high-wear surfaces). See Laminate Thickness Guide.
Thermosetting Resin
A resin that permanently hardens when cured under heat and pressure, making HPL laminates rigid and dimensionally stable.

V

Veneer
A thin slice of natural wood applied to surfaces for a genuine wood appearance. More expensive than wood-grain laminates. See Laminate vs Veneer comparison.
VOC (Volatile Organic Compound)
Chemical compounds emitted as gases from laminates and adhesives. Low-VOC products contribute to healthier indoor air quality.

W

Wear Layer
The protective overlay on a laminate surface that provides abrasion, scratch, and stain resistance.
Warping
Distortion of a laminated panel due to unequal moisture absorption or improper balancing. Prevented by using balancing laminates and proper substrate conditioning.
